First new mix in over a year . . . . .

Finally got the spare/dining room cleared out in our new Gaff and I've set it up as a study/music room/man (bear-pig) cave.  Got round to setting up the music part of it and recorded a mix.  Here it is if you want to listen/download.

EDIT: On Soundcloud now too: http://soundcloud.com/glasto_mongrel/16-12-2001-mix

   http://www.mixcrate.com/mix/102421/Paul-Mansell-I-love-you-Son

I've dedicated it to my Festival dad Dave Letorey in tribute of his quitting smoking cigarettes, a path that I am beginning to tread as we speak!  Enjoy, Hate, Download, Ridicule . . . I don't care, I enjoyed making it :-D

N.B. It really kicks off at about 50 mins :-)

Stay Mongrel :-) xxxxx

Amazing Doner Kebab Recipe . . . . . .

Found this amazing Doner Kebab recipe online, tastes exactly like they do from the dirtiest of post pub kebab shops, absolutely lush! Got one in the oven now but trying it made with beef mince this time rather than the lamb.  Cheap, easy, tasty!

This is my Breakfast . . . . . .

This is my breakfast,
there are many others like it but this one is mine,
My breakfast is my best friend,
It is my life.
I must savor it as I must savor my life.
Without bacon, my breakfast is useless,
without my breakfast, I am useless.
I must eat my breakfast with juice,
I must seperate and discard my eggwhite, which is trying to kill me.
I must isolate the yolk before the white begins to bubble.
I will.
Before the pan I swear this creed:
my breakfast and myself are defenders of my country,
we are the masters of our enemy,
we are saviours of my life.
So be it,
until there is no hunger,
but gluttony.
Amen

Living the Dream, Real Ale and Fame . . . . . .

This is a proud moment, Reddy and I have made the cover of the Derby Drinker!  All those hangovers have finally been proven to be 100% worth it.  Now, off to the shops to get a nice frame so I can bask in the glory of being a real ale poster boy!

Derby Feste 2011 . . . .

Yesterday I went into town to see some live performances as part of Derby Feste.  My friend Simon had asked me to record his spoken word performance.  He speaks, rhymes and raps about politics, relationships, capitalism, activism, community and life.  Well worth a watch, here it is, available in full 1080p HD (if you change the settings) . . . . . .

Looks like I came 4th . . . . .

Well folks, didn't quite make the top three in the Rock Archive Glastonbury Photo Competition final, but I did come 4th, which I am very pleased about.

A massive thank you to everyone that voted, I have until June 2013 to prepare for the next one. Perhaps I'll be using an iPhone 6 for my shots by then!

For now though, I'll leave up to the nice chap at 'Will It Blend' to teach my iPhone 4 not to let me down like that again!

Just Added a Twitter Follow Button . . . . .

I've just added a Twitter 'Follow Me' button to the right hand side should any of you want to follow me on Twitter for any reason, it's now just a click away.

Mongrel's review of Bestival proceedings . . . . .

What can I say about Bestival . . . . . . . . it was AMAZING!
We got the train to Southampton early Thursday morning, where upon arrival we discovered that there was a 3 hour queue for the ferry we'd booked onto (slow one) and half an hour wait for the fast catamaran.  A ticket upgrade later and we'd set sail, heading to an island I'd not visited since a 12 hour Vespa ride to the Isle of Wight Scooter Rally.
Once on the Island we located the shuttle bus queue and got some ciders in from the local Co-Op.  The queue was an hour or two long, but when you have cider, sunshine and heaps of excited people, it doesn't really trouble you.  However, it was still a welcome sight when we saw a shuttle bus pull up, which at this point in the queue, we thought we'd be sure to get on.  The next part set the tone for the entire festival.  As it turned out, it was hit or miss as to whether we'd fit onto the bus or have to wait for the next one.  As we neared the front of the queue it looked as though we'd have to wait another half hour or so for another, when to our absolute delight, an open topped tourist bus turned up, displaying BESTIVAL in the destination panel! Not only were we getting on a bus, we were getting on an open topped one.  The excitement spread through the upper deck and we were soon chatting away to our fellow travelers.
Upon arrival, it was a short walk to Blue camping where we got set up and went to explore.  After seeing Paul TM and his Forum Allstar friends kick off the big top with a quality DJ set, we went exploring.
The site is fantastic.  Very hilly, but this just made it more interesting and allowed more creativity with the decor.  The main stage was nicely positioned and decorated with welcoming smiley faces and brightly coloured artwork.  Upon finding the woods, we were in wonderland!  Huge hammocks in the trees, illuminated bird sculptures, wood carved critters and an adventure playground were particular highlights.
The atmosphere was very friendly and excitable, with a wide range of ages present all intent on having the best time of their lives.
From finding and successfully navigating the adventure playground to the Monday morning is a bit of a blur if I'm honest, so I'll just list some of the artists/bands that I was particularly impressed by.
Public Enemy played a brilliant set and allowed FlavorFlav to show off and quote from his latest book. "Read about how I lost my virginity aged 6, and it wasn't from abuse, it was a girl the same age." was a particularly memorable quote!
Magnetic Man were brilliant and were followed by Zane Lowe, who played an excellent mix of tunes.
I think Crystal Fighters came next, they blew all of us away, they were much better than at Glastonbury and that was an excellent set.
From there we went via a Filthy Dukes DJ set at the Arcadia rig, to Groove Armada.  A real full on show, trippy lights, high sound levels and a crazy dance floor full of people just wanting to party hard.
Saturday was all about one thing for me, PJ Harvey.  She didn't disappoint, one of the best shows I've ever seen ever!
As the weekend went on I seem to remember less and less and it all kind of melds into one big bunch of happiness in my mind.
Sunday we went for a carvery at the pub by the gate at the top of the hill.  It was a nice recharge and went down well with a few pints.
Later, I saw Macka B and the Roots Ragga band who were brilliant and then headed to Bjork who was . . . . . strange.  That night was the big party night and we spent hours walking round the different late night areas having a dance and talking rubbish to randoms.
Woke up Monday morning to gale force winds and driving rain and began the journey home.  All in all, not too bad, hour and a half for the shuttle, hour and a half for the ferry.  The best part of it was, even though thoroughly broken, the people in the queue were just as excited and happy as they were at the beginning.

As I said, most of this just sits in my brain as an unorganised pile of happiness and laughter so the events described may not be chronologically accurate and are far from a comprehensive review of all of our adventures.  Ooh, did I mention the toboggan ride!?  Or the Womens Institute tent?  Or the fireworks?

To conclude, Bestival is one of the best festivals I've been to, it's right up there with Glastonbury.  I expect to see all you mongrels there next year so you can see for yourselves, definitely not to be missed!

Countdown to Bestival 2011 . . . .

As I write there are only 6 days to go until Bestival 2011.  It'll be my first time at Bestival and I'm really looking forward to it.  In my opinion, it's the best festival line-up of the year by a country mile.

There are so many bands I'm looking forward to seeing.  I wont list them, I'll just give you the link to a Spotify playlist of all the bands (excluding any I've somehow overlooked) . . . . . . CLICK HERE!

IGN Game of Thrones Review: Episode 3

Here's the review for episode 3, in my opinion the most gripping episode so far, I was devastated when the end credits came up. I could watch this series all day long!

IGN Game of Thrones Review: Episode 2

Time for a catch up, here's the ign review of episode 2 of Game of Thrones. Episode 3 to follow in a minute. I've also found the very good 'Thronecast' podcast on itunes, well worth a look, great for making the mass amounts of information presented in the episodes easier to understand.

Top Ten Bands/Artists of the Week

W/C 01/03/2011

Here's my top ten for the week, although it may be slightly skewed due to problems scrobbling from my iPhone.  All sorted now though.

1. Elbow

2. Cage the Elephant

3. PJ Harvey

4. Anti-Flag

5. Arcade Fire

6. Gil Scott-Heron

7. LCD Soundsystem

8. R.E.M.

9. Tim Armstrong

10. Art Brut

A bit different from last week.  I'd never even conciously listened to Elbow before but thought I'd give them a try due to my current lack of options listed for Glastonbury and the fact that they have a new hyped up album out.  I wasn't overly impressed first listen through but it looks like it's a grower.  I took some advice and listened to 'The Seldom Seen Kid' album and I've definitely pencilled them in to watch at G.

Cage the Elephant, another band with a new album, really liked their last one but grew out of it eventually.  The new one, 'Thank You, Happy Birthday' has a very different sound and is a fantastic album.  The song 'Shake Me Down,' (single from the new album) is quite possibly the best song I have ever heard.  I'm praying for a Glastonbury performance.

PJ Harvey I explained last week and still can;t get enough of the album.

Anti-Flag are my protest song/noisy punk band that I listen to when I'm feeling energetic.  I also seem to favour them in the summer for some reason so todays nice weather is probably behind them being in my top ten.

Arcade Fire are still keeping me entertained with Suburbs, I would love to be going to one of the gigs but perhaps foolishly decided to rely on festivals.

Gil Scott-Heron is quite frequently heard from my iPod since discovering him only last year through a phantom Glastonbury TBC on eFestivals.

LCD Soundsystem are another fine weather band for me, think we had some nice weather a few days back where I played them loudly from the car.

R.E.M. New album, not at all impressed, might give it another go though.

Tim Armstrong quite often gets a few plays as a bit of a mood lifter, a very happy sound with music from The Aggrolites.

Art Brut, listening to them after reading a thread on eFestivals speculating whether they'd play the G.  One of my fave peformances of G2008.

Here's a spotify playlist with a random song from each Artist/Band where available (No Arcade Fire) -----> LINK

Ancient Human Remains, Fascinating but Creepy . . .

So today was the day of the human remains practical in Environmental Archaeology.  I've been looking forward to it for a while, just because it sounded cool.  Not only was it cool, it was very very interesting.
We were presented with a set of bones from a few thousand years ago, Bronze Age I think and tasked with determining the age, sex and height of the person when they croaked.  We had to look at things like bone fusion, wearing of the teeth, shape of the pelvis etc . . .

As cool and fascinating as it was, it was also a little creepy to be handling human remains.  Leg and arm bones were fine, as were toes, knees and vertebrae.  It was when handling the skull that the hairs started to twitch on the back of my neck.  Upon turning it over and viewing it from the inside (like a mask) the hairs on my neck were fully erect and I started to wince as I noticed the brittlness of the eye sockets.  Then came the part where we had to look for exposed dentine on the teeth.  Holding a human skull and examining the teeth, watching them wiggle and shake around as I rotated the poor blokes loaf in my sweaty hands, sent shivvers up and down my spine and caused a tight knot to form in my gut.  I soon put it down and moved onto measuring the far less creepy femur, thinking of how nice it would be for the dog to toss around the garden.

Despite the creepiness factor, it was fascinating and amazing to have the opportunity to work with something from so far back in history.  A clay pot or an arrowhead would have been sufficient to give me the wow factor, but ancient human bones were something that I thought I'd only ever see on the Discovery channel.  I'm actually quite looking forward to doing the write up for it and hoping to learn a lot more about the things that we can determine from thousands of years old remains.  I'm hoping there is another archaeology based module that I can take next semester.

Tuneful Tuesdays W/C 22 Feb 2011

Hey peoples, I'm considering making this a weekly feature of my blog.  Basically a run down of my  top ten most listened to artists of the preceding week according to Last.fm.  I'm also going to try and create a spotify playlist of the featured artists (where available).  I'm hoping over time it'll be quite interesting and perhaps fun (for me anyway) to see how my musical tastes change and what factors might affect what I'm listening to.
It'd also be nice to have a bit of a discussion about the artists that pop-up so please share any comments or information that you may have on any of them in the comments section below.
Anyway, here's my most listened to artists from the week commencing 22 Feb 2011 . . . .

1. Operation Ivy
2. PJ Harvey
3. HIM
4.System of a Down
5. Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX
6. The Aggrolites
7. Beady Eye
8. The Casualties
9. The Exploited
10. Reel Big Fish

Wow, a lot of ska and punk in there this week.  I think that's perhaps to do with me joining the forums at www.punkrockers.com.  You never can have too much ska though.
New albums (for me anyway) from PJ Harvey, Beady Eye and Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX have caused them to appear in my top ten.  I'm loving the new PJ Harvey album, it'll make my Glasto if she plays.  Beady Eye album is predictable, but I've picked up a few decent tracks on a quick listen through and the Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX album is out of this world!  A festival appearence for GSH and JXX would be most welcome however unlikely.

Here's the link to the Spotify Playlist, feel free to comment below :-D

I don't remember jobs being this scarce . . . . .

So, I'm currently looking for a part-time job, pretty much anything will do we just need more money to maintain our lifestyle.  I've worked many a part-time job in the past and can never remember them being this thin on the ground.

Can anyone remember being a student and maybe offer some advice or highlight any areas that I may have overlooked?  I've applied to Burger World but think that my sudden disappearance from the Newquay branch may cause me issues if they go there for a reference.  I've got a few kitchen/bar work vacancies to chase up, but beyond that all the other listed jobs are those borderline scams wanting you to be a manager of your own business by delivering cleaning catalogues or some crap.

I'm guessing it's only going to get worse as the cuts hit and more and more people are forced into taking anything they can get.

All over the net already but worth posting . . . .

Here's one for those into gaming and/or geekery, others will find it meh . . . .

Today saw the launch of the official trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and it looks the biz!  I am proper excited for this, almost to the point of wishing away the summer (but not quite lol)  Here it is . . . . . . .

A poem I wrote about the evil Norovirus

Here's a poem I just wrote about my week spent living with Norovirus

Mister Noro

My thoughts spritely danced through lush flowered meadows,
and pondered long beaches made pretty with pebbles.
My energy was high my motivation unmatched,
a revitalised me had not long ago hatched.

Soon after embarking on this happy routine,
my happiness peaked at the me I had seen.
No wasting my day by lying bed,
I was up amongst nature with the sky tinted red.

Then early one evening on the day of the sun,
a nice quiet break aft the weeks race was run.
Was spoiled so sudden these things sent to try us,
I'd somehow ingested the grim Norovirus.

Not long after laying my intention to rest,
Mister Noro made clear he'd completed his nest.
Maelstrom in gut and regretting the sarnie,
I made a mad dash barely making the Khazi.

Explosions and flashes Expulsions and pain,
gastroenteritis confirmed my new bane.
This wasnt't the cramps of much cider or perry,
twas a Calciviridae that dwelt in my belly.

No cure no hope the end not in sight,
this tiny invader had drained all my might.
For hours and days my food lay untouched,
a cool glass of water was still way too much.

Now still horizontal but with light at the tunnel,
most food still eludes me through fear of more trouble.
For now it's more rest til I make my return,
nothing more to report so for now I adjourn.

Beautiful Sunrise to Beautiful Sunset . . . . .

Here's a few images (Click to enlarge) that I took today.  The first is of the sun rising amongst the 'pools' of mist, as seen from the back garden and the other two are of the sun setting over the Amber Valley.  On the final image you can see Crich Stand to the right.  Here's a link to the website so you can see what it actually is.  It's certainly got an interesting history.  I hope to try and catch it when the sun is setting directly behind it.  I'm not sure whether I've missed it or if it's yet to come, let alone whether I'll be able to capture it at any meaningful quality without a top of the range camera etc. . . . .  I'll check whether I've missed it at some point on Stellarium.

Saxon Unleashed!!!

I finally took the plunge and let Saxon off of his lead today.  He's been off it before just not with me.  I was pretty scared that he'd just leg it and get run over or something.  Turns out he was very good and came back when I shouted him.  He ran super fast and chased down a stick that we found over and over again.  I did six laps of the football pitch with him and then walked the long way home to try and get some of the mud from his paws.  It's a shed load better walking him off the lead.  We didn't encounter any other dogs though so I guess we'll see if he's really good when that happens.
In other Saxon related news, he's figured out he can get on top of the bag of gravel we're going to finish the garden with and look over the fence.  He should be an olympic high jumper if he can get up there!

Sweedish Furniture, a Happy Birthday and a Mucky Party . . . . .

Well, this weekend went all too quickly.  Spent Friday night (until 0130) building a massive wardrobe, yesterday was my Nephews' first birthday party and today Naomi has been at my sisters Ann Summers party, so I've been to visit my Mother.  It feels like this is the first time I've managed to sit down and chill out.
More busy times ahead though, next weekend we're away to a birthday party and the following weekend is party time as the 'Bristol Headbangers' reunite at a new location (our house) for a weekend of messiness and Dreadzone.  It'll be festival season before we know it!

I got to drive my nephews' for the first time today too, dropped them off and my sisters and picked up Naomi.  I was giving them a guided tour on the way: "On your left you will see The Beehive, where I shall take you for beer and football when you are nearly old enough . . . etc . . .

Here's a couple of pics of the laddos enjoying their birthday

Necromania Mongrel . . . .

I've just booked my spot for my first archaeology practical.  I think archaeology is going to be one of my favourite modules.  Apparently we get to play with real proper human remains at some point in the near future!  How creepingly awesome is that going to be!?!?  I think I'm really going to enjoy my module choices this semester, especially mucking about with real human skulls and stuff!  Gotta get through tomorrow first though, Data Transfer Analysis & Presentation on a Monday morning is a hefty price to pay for anything.

I'm back and I survived . . . . . just

Hello there, first post for a while due to exams, but they're now finished and I survived . . . . just.  I don't think I did too well and am expecting to have to resit a couple at least.  This could be avoided (as I understand) if I ace my Spring semester modules, which I intend to do.
If there's one good thing to come out of January exams, it's that they highlighted that I need to do a lot more work and reading around my subjects when not at university.  The bad side however, is that there is a small chance that one or more of the resits (if required) could potentially fall during Bestival.  I'm starting to formulate a plan that would navigate around this problem, but it's still in it's early stages and there are many hurdles to overcome.
This is the first week of the new semester and I've so far had lectures in two of my new modules.  One was Data Transfer Analysis & Presentation, which seems boring as!  One highlight though was that one of the lecturers is called Dr John Hammond like off of Jurassic Park!  The other module was Managing Tourism and the Environment: Conflict or Consensus.  The lecturer for this one seems a right laugh and seems very passionate about his field.
Today, I have my third lecture of the new semester which is Environmental Archeology.  I'm quite looking forward to this as it involves bones and fossils and cool stuff like that.  Maybe one day I could end up on time team digging shit out of the ground to find out what the climate etc was like back in the good old days when God were a lad!

Anyway, must dash, lecture is in an hour :-)

So are they going to give us batons and ask us to help keep it under control???

Should be interesting . . . PC PROTEST

Week one of get back to health over . . . . . .

Well folks, I weighed myself today after a full week of being back on the Atkins Diet and exercising a little, and I've lost 3.5Kg or 7.7lbs.  I'm pretty happy with that, I've just got to hope that the weight loss doesn't slow too much, and I'll be hitting my target for Bearded Theory :-)

Friday, 7 January 2011

Ooops, that turned into a long revision break . . . .

About lunchtime I decided to take a break from my revision for an hour or so and have a mess around with Ableton Live (Music production software).  I've had it a while but never got round to installing it.  Turns out it's rate good fun and massivley addicting making (or in my case attempting to make) music.  An hour turned into 4 in the end and so the above track is the sum of my revision . . . . . . . . . . I wonder if any of it comes up in the exam???

If any of you like chilli . . . . . .

Click Here for a recepie from BBC Good Food that i've been using for a while.  Having it tonight (minus the kidney beans cause of carbs) It's the best chilli recepie I've tasted in over a quarter of a century!!!

Pepperpepperami . . . . . With Cheese!

Really good day today, did my workout this morning and actually felt a little bit of enjoyment in between the gasping for breath and sweating.  I also took the dawg out again for half hour or so.

Then I headed off to my parents house to use their washer as ours is broken (hopefully only until Wednesday.)  Whilst the washing was doing I carried on with my revision, which I'm thrilled to say seemed to start fitting into place today.  So much so that I attempted one of the practise question sets and knew every answer :-)

Back home now for a nice Atkins compliant snack to tide me over until tea time.  Didn't have lunch because I had a late breakfast and so I'll probably be having tea later too.  Pepperpepperami and cheese, Lovely!

Dog Waddling

Well it's a scheduled rest day from my fitness program today and I'm more than thankful. If not for the sake of my legs which have just about seized up solid, then for the sake of my education. I'm at the beginning of another day of intense revision.

I have exercised a small amount though, by walking the dog a couple of miles, which seems to have loosened up my legs a little. At the beginning i was just kind of waddling along like one of them penguins off the telly, struggling to pick my feet up!

I was going to show Naomi Saturn through the telescope this morning but clouds wind and rain have yet again thwarted my efforts.

Ah well, back to the books. . . .

That was stupid hard. I am so unfit and fat I nearly yakked after the first exercise!!!

Just finished my first workout with EA Sports active 2 and I am knackered!!! Got me pouring with sweat and hurt my legs a hell of a lot.  I think its all the weight they have to carry combined with being couch locked for the past 5 months.  This is going to be a lot harder than I thought, but I'll stick with it.  Now, time for a shower and some intense studying.

New Year, New Blog

Hi everyone, since windows are shutting down the old blog site I thought I'd make a new one on here.  I'm just going to use it to record my thoughts, activities and anything cool I find.

For the first few months of the year it will also serve as a motivational aid to help me shift all this fat I've lumped on since moving back up here.  I aim to lose 3 stone by Bearded Theory (14th May for all you none festi types).  I did it before in Bristol and I reckon I can do it again.  I'm going to do Atkins again and start using the fitness program on my Kinect.  I'm gutted by my current level of fitness and can barely walk to the shop without getting out of breath.  The good news is that I've already managed to quit smoking so that should aid me in my quest.  I aim to be able to ride my pushbike (and enjoy it) by April and want to be surfing again by the autumn.

Anyway, today is my last day of eating whatever I want so I'm going to have a bit of a carbohydrate binge washed down with my remaining lager (I'm gonna miss you)

It may take me a while to get used to the new blog format but I'll do my best.  This week will no doubt be uneventful, as from tomorrow I'll be following a strict revision plan so that one day I can save the world from Sarah Palin and all the other climate change sceptic dogs arsehole horrible puss filled zits!

Anyroad, my black pudding is almost done so cheerio for now.

Keep it Ice Road folks! :-)
